What is Carbon 1018?
Carbon 1018 is a low carbon steel made up of medium manganese content. This is a good case hardening grade, a process in which a grade that has under .30 basis points of carbon is subjected to a special heat treatment with the intent of adding more carbon to the case.
Carbon 1018 has fair machinability and can be readily brazed and welded.
Cold finished Carbon 1018 means the hot-rolled bar has been pulled through a die of lesser size. Cold drawing gives the hot rolled bar a bright, clean, uniform surface and increases tensile and yield strength. Cold drawing also increases torsional strength, surface hardness, wear resistance and imparts significant improvement in machinability. In some cases, the bar could be subsequently subjected to grinding and polishing operations.
What is Carbon 1018 Used For?
Carbon 1018 is suitable for shafting and for applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.
