Our History
50+ years of experience working with machine shops and tool & die shops.
Our roots go back to 1968 when we were founded as Chattanooga Machine and Fabrication. Like other machine shops and tool & die shops nationwide at the time, we were frustrated by the high cut fees and unreasonable minimum order requirements of local steel suppliers. Some saw it as a challenge, but we took it as an opportunity to make an impact.
In 1984, we became Southern Tool Steel, with the intent to eliminate these challenges for others while providing a better solution overall. What started out as three employees, a 1,100-sq.ft. facility and one saw has evolved today to become a company that is 50 employees strong. From production cutting to Blanchard grinding, to our 14 high-speed saws, our capabilities continue to evolve, all aligned with our original intent: to solve critical challenges for machine shops and tool & die shops. This intent was further enhanced in 2015 when we joined the Ryerson Family of Companies, which allows us to provide customers with unprecedented access to material and value-added services. From here, the opportunities to provide value are endless.
